Jimmy Carr revealed earlier this year that he’s become a dad for the first time, and he told Chris Moyles that he feared the “life-changing” experience of being a father had made him “softer” for comedy.
Carr, 49, stunned fans when it was revealed that he welcomed a son two years ago with his long term partner, Karoline
He announced the news during a stand-up comedy gig at the O2 Academy Brixton.
Jimmy said: “We’re going to have a gender reveal party for our kid but we’re going to wait until he’s 21 just to be sure. With some babies you can’t tell, is it a boy or an ugly girl?”
The comedian opened up to Radio X host Chris Moyles on Monday morning about how fatherhood has changed him immeasurably, but how he feared the worst for his career.
Chris asked if the experience had been “proper life-changing”.
Jimmy replied: “Proper life changing but then again, I did gigs the other week so I’m refreshing the tour, and I just like writing new jokes for the tour.
“I was doing some warmup dates and I was a bit worried, I’m a bit softer now and I’ve got something to care about, maybe it will take the edge off a little,” he explained.
“I did the gig and nope. Brutal. Even my audience were like ‘wow man…alright!'” he joked.
Jimmy told Chris he “never thought” he would be a dad, explaining: “Well I really wanted a kid, but it was that thing where I thought I’d left it too late.”
He said the experience was “joyful, it’s really lovely”, and “it’s like having a medical procedure where your heart now lives outside your body”.
Over the weekend it emerged that Jimmy had a sweary exchange with a heckler who wouldn’t stop interrupting, and he called for his personal security guard to remove him from the venue.
Tune into The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, weekdays from 6:30am – 10am and Saturdays 8am – 11am
