Peter Scolari dead: Girls and Bosom Buddies star dies after two-year cancer battle

Girls star Peter Scolari has died at the age of 66 after suffering from cancer for two years.

The actor is famous for portraying Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath’s father Ted in the show from 2012 until 2017.

His death was confirmed on Friday, in a statement released by his manager Ellen Lubin Sanitsky.

Peter appeared in a number of projects earlier this year, starring in TV show Evil as Bishop Thomas Marx.

He also appeared as Dave Debusher in the Apple TV+ Stephen King adaptation Lisey’s Story, alongside Julianne Moore and Clive Owen.

He also has four children, Nicholas, Joseph, Keaton, and Cali.

Peter found fame starring alongside Tom Hanks in hit 1980s TV comedy, Bosom Buddies.

After a successful career on stage and screen, the actor joined the cast of HBO’s Girls in 2012 as Hannah’s closeted father Ted.

In the show’s fourth series, his character came out as gay, leading Peter into a storyline for which he picked up an Emmy in 2016.

A number of his colleagues and co-stars have posted their tributes to Peter in the wake of his passing.

Posting to Instagram, Lena Dunham wrote: “The shyest extrovert, the most dramatic comedian, the most humble icon.”

She added: “Thank you, Scolari, for every chat between set ups, every hug onscreen and off and every, ‘Oh, Jeez’.

“We will miss you so much.”

On Twitter, Evil showrunner Robert King wrote: “To watch Peter Scolari’s dailies was a thrill because he always found new ways to go.

“He moulded the highs and lows of a scene, but always looking for the comic spin, and he’d massage a phrase with each take until he could hear the laughter in his head.

“This is a real loss.”

Newhart actor David Pressman wrote: “My time on Newhart wasn’t long but in the few episodes I did, most of my stuff was with Peter Scolari.

“I’ll never forget how kind and supportive he was and so incredibly talented. I was honored to get to work with him. RIP, Peter.”

Stage star Harvey Fierstein wrote: “Sad to see the news that Peter Scolari lost his battle with cancer.

“There wasn’t a sweeter man on the planet. We performed together in HAIRSPRAY for a time and he was always a total delight. Farewell, dear Peter.”
