'Rust': Woman dead and crew wounded as prop gun misfires on Alec Baldwin's Western film

A woman has died and a second person is seriously injured on the “Rust” movie set after an accidental shooting.

A 42-year-old woman has died after the Bonanza Creek Ranch was put on “lockdown” following a prop gun ‘misfiring’, according to police.

The lockdown was put in place, where Alec Baldwin and Frances Fisher are filming, by Santa Fe County Sheriff Deputies at 2pm on Thursday.

The department said in a statement: “The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western ‘Rust’

“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged.

“Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

The department added, the women was transported by helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she died.

The man who was also injured has been taken to Christas St. Vincent Hospital.

A producer said in an earlier statement to ABC News: “Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care.

“Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority.”

A KOB4 reporter, took to social media to explain how security had locked down the set last nigh.

She said: “Security guard at the entrance to the set of “Rust”, a western movie in production in #SantaFe, told us the set is on lockdown right now.

“Couldn’t share anything else.

“Waiting for more details from Santa Fe Sheriff on today’s incident near Bonanza Creek.”

Eyewitness Tessa Mentus, also explained the situation on social media.

She penned: “At this point we know that incident happened at 2 p.m. today, and the Santa Fe County fire chief is briefing her team.”

The new Western movie written and directed by Joel Souza follows an outlaw who has had a bounty on his head for years.

Alec Baldwin and Brady Noon are among the big names starring in the film where the duo run from a bounty-hunter to try and survive.

He is best known by fans for his roles in Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October to Rise of the Guardians, It’s Complicated and he voiced the film, The Boss Baby.

In recent years, Alec has taken up comedy after playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live for which he was handed a Primetime Emmy Award.

Jensen Ackles is also starring in the film as a U.S Marshal after his role as Dean Winchester on the hit series Supernatural came to an end.

The show ended in 2020 after fifteen series but it didn’t take long for Ackles to land his next big role.
