Sacha Baron Cohen confirms the return of Ali G after stand-up gig success

Sacha Baron Cohen fans and Ali G fans will be thrilled to hear that their favourite failed rapper is back.

In June, Sacha Baron Cohen, 49, held some super secret stand up gigs where he tried some new material involving the well-loved legend Ali G.

The character Alistair Leslie Graham made a rare appearance in Sydney, Australia at the Comedy Store in Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter.

The great reception may have triggered Sacha Baron Cohen to bring Ali G back as speaking to GQ he said: “Yes, I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun.”

On whether we can expect a proper return he added: “Yes, I think I would. The reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes.

“To actually hear laughter is a rare thing for me. When I do the movies, I have to wait three months to hear an audience laugh.”

Ali G first appeared on our TV screens in 1998 on The 11 O’Clock Show and his last appearance before Australia was at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

In the Millennium he presented his own show called The Ali G Show which showed him interviewing various high-profile celebs, politicians, and many other public figures who were unaware that Ali G was a fictional character.

Stars such as Buzz Aldrin, David Beckham, Tony Benn, Boutros-Boutros Ghali, Noam Chomsky, Jarvis Cocker, Gaz Coombes, Paul Daniels, Mohamed Al-Fayed, Newt Gingrich, John Humphrys, Donald Trump, Gore Vidal and Shaquille O’Neal have all been interviewed by Ali G.

Believed to be loosely based on British DJ and rapper Tim Westwood, Ali G catchphrases such as “Aight” or “Aiii” (alright), “Booyakasha”, “Big up Yaself”, “Wagwaan”, “West Side”, “Batty Boy” “Respek”, “For Real”, “Punani”, “Check It”, “Wicked” and “Keep It Real” have become globally popular.

In 2007 Sacha Baron Cohen chose to retire Ali G because his profile had grown too large and he could no longer get away with his well-known pranks.

After 14 years, we cannot wait to see Ali G get up to his usual escapades in more stand up shows.
