BBC viewers grew tearful when a comedy legend made a surprise appearance on 2021’s Strictly Christmas Special.
Only Fools and Horses legend Sir David Jason appeared in the studio during a festive edition of the BBC One dancing show – which aired on Christmas Day (December 25).
The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades had just finished his routine with professional dancer Luba Mushtuk – where they scored 34 points for their jive.
They had danced to the Only Fools and Horses theme song – Hooky Street – and they got a surprise message from the leading man of the beloved British comedy – Sir David himself, who played Del Boy.
Host Claudia Winkleman introduced the surprise just before Jay got his scores for the dance – and he became teary eyed when he saw the 81-year-old actor on the screen – as Jason is his hero.
David said:” Hello, Hay. It’s your old mate Del Boy here. I understand you’re doing a bit of prancing about up there at the BBC. Well good luck with that, my son.
He then joked: “I understand that you’re doing it to my theme song. That means there will be a royalty, right? Put it in an envelope at the BBC reception centre – I’ll pick it up later.
“In the meantime I want to wish you all the best.”
He then thanked everyone who supported the show over the years, and finished off with one of Del’s famous catchphrases: “You know it makes sense.”
Fans were shocked to see the actor on their screens, and many rushed to Twitter to share their excitement.
One fan said: “Oh man, just got a bit teary seeing David Jason’s message for Jay on #Strictly”
A second commented: “What a cool surprise a whole only fools and horses dance and the legend Sir David Jason at the end. That’s a Christmas special brought a tear to the eye”

A fourth agreed: “David Jason what a classy legend!! I wish he’d do another Only Fools & Horses or Open All Hours. Great shows!”
A fifth added: “That David Jason insert was a nice touch. Jay seemed genuinely moved”
Jay won 34 points for his dance, but his was singer Anne Marie who was crowned the victor in the end.
The Voice judge bagged a perfect 40 point score from the judges for her cha cha with Graziano Di Prima.
