The One Show's Alex Jones in tears as she meets boy who got diagnosed with cancer

Alex Jones started crying when she met a teen cancer survivor called Nathan, who was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 13.

The One Show host grew emotional as she spoke to Nathan, who has been announced as a member of Children In Need’s inspirational Surprise Squad.

Nathan got a diagnosis for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when he was 13.

Nathan told the BBC presenter all about his life-changing experience of being diagnosed with leukameia at such a young age – a chat that was aired to The One Show on Monday night (November 15).

Sitting down with Nathan, Alex asked him: “What were the first thoughts that you had when you hear that you’ve had cancer?”

Nathan replied: “‘Life is over’, really. So I had to come to terms with the fact that I might end up dying quite young.

The brave teen spoke about the effects of the cancer on his body.

He explained “I lost the use of my legs. I remember the doctor telling me that my blood was so filled with cancer that the bones were on the verge of popping.

“Putting any sort of weight on them was incredibly painful.”

He went on to explain that he used to be in a wheelchair and went bald, and that people used to stare and point at him.

Nathan admitted; “I ended up very lonely. My self-esteem just disappeared.”

Alex said: “It’s a lot to cope with, isn’t it? For a young person. So who was your biggest support, then, during that time?”

Nathan said: ” That was my mother. I tell everyone if it wasn’t for her, I’d be dead.”

Alex replied: “I can’t even imagine what your mother must have been through.”

Proud mum Alex recently welcomed her third child, a baby girl called Annie.

The presenter then welled up as she admitted: “Look, you’re making me cry, Nathan!”

The One Show’s Surprise Squad is a new fundraising team for this year’s Children In Need.

The five young people who have been selected for the squad will travel across the UK to complete challenges in aid of Children in Need.

This could be anything from creating a secret garden for a children’s hospice, or organising a community fundraising event to give a local project a boost.
