Thomas Markle ‘fell in love’ with daughter Meghan as soon as she was born

Thomas Markle, father to Meghan Markle, has opened up about her birth in a new interview.

Speaking with 60 Minutes Australia, Meghan’s estranged dad explained how he was the first person to hold Meghan as a baby, even before her mother.

The pair fell out after claims from Meghan that Thomas staged paparazzi pictures of himself preparing for her wedding to Prince Harry – though he initially denied “working with the tabloids”.

The Duchess of Sussex successfully won a court case against The Mail on Sunday after it published extracts of a letter she sent to her father, which he had shared with the publication.

Thomas has said Meghan would be “nothing” without him, telling The Mail: “What riles me is Meghan’s sense of superiority. She’d be nothing without me. I made her the duchess she is today.

‘”Everything that Meghan is, I made her.”

And now Thomas has opened up more about his daughter’s birth, telling the Australian news outlet: “August fourth, 40 years ago, Meghan was born, and she was born via C-section so she was put in my arms.

“I was the first person to hold her, and her little hand went around my fingers, and I fell in love with her, and I have been that way for 40 years.”

Some old home videos of Meghan’s childhood was shown alongside Thomas’ interview, in which she can be seen to deliver a sweet birthday message to her dad.

“I hope you’re having the best birthday you’ve ever had,” young Meghan said in one clip. “Thank you for everything.”

Thomas continued: “I’ll be very disappointed that I don’t get to hold my granddaughter. Of course it hurts.”

He said that even axe-murderers are afforded better treatment, elaborating: “There are axe-murderers in prison, and their family comes to see them. I’m not an axe-murderer. I made one dumb mistake and I’ve never been forgiven for it.”

Thomas did not attend the royal wedding, at the time allegedly due to a heart attack.

Meghan said in a statement at the time of the wedding: “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”

Meghan remains estranged from her father to this day.

Thomas doesn’t appear to shoulder much of the blame for the estrangement or Meghan’s mental health struggles.

When asked: “Do you think it’s possible that you’re partly to blame [for the move away from the Royal Family]?”, he simply responded: “If I am, tell me why and how and I’ll try to fix it. But I don’t know why or how.”
