Former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will open up on his mental health battles for a new upfront and honest documentary to “help fans understand” him better.
The former football player and his wife Coleen, both 35, will be the subject of an upcoming Amazon Original documentary surrounding his life and career – set to be released early next year.
Rooney, now manager of Championship side Derby, addresses some difficult topics in the one-off film, addressing controversial moments that caused a media stir both on and off the field.
And while fans think they know him from the headlines, they’re set to get a different view.

He said ahead of the launch: “This was different, having the cameras at home, seeing how we interact with each other and the kids.
“I think we got some very good footage of us as a family.
“It will be good for everyone to see because they’ll have a better understanding of me.”
Speaking of his mental health, Wayne added: “Throughout a young sportsperson’s life they go through difficult periods and there is a lot of me talking about moments where I was really down, I didn’t want to be around anyone.

When quizzed about why he decided to do the revealing documentary and open his himself up to the public eye, he said: “I felt it was important for everyone to see me as a person, behind the scenes as a family man.
“Growing up in a council estate in Liverpool wasn’t easy. Getting thrown into the spotlight as a 16-year-old. The film captures a lot of that. It’s exciting for me to do this.”

He continued to discuss the matter of his mental health, commenting: “People talk about mental health, at the time I did see someone at times. It is about realising what was going through your head and trying to cope with the pressure of playing for Manchester United and trying to be successful, playing for your country, then captaining your country and taking a lot of that pressure on as well.
“They will get a real insight into what was going on inside my head.”
Rooney burst on to the scene as a 16-year-old for Everton in 2002 before starring at Euro 2004 for the Three Lions, which led to a then world record move for a teenager to Manchester United.
Off the pitch, Wayne has been married to his childhood sweetheart Coleen Rooney since 2008.
Together, the two Croxteth-born stars share four children together; Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and Cass, three.
The Amazon Original documentary, titled Rooney, is scheduled to be released in early 2022
