Actress Barrie Youngfellow dies aged 75 as tributes pour in for 'loyal' star

Actress Barrie Youngfellow has died aged 75.

The actress, who starred in the likes of It’s a Living, Blossom and Nightmare in Blood died earlier this week, her family have recently confirmed in an obituary.

The obituary didn’t reveal any cause of death as they instead celebrated her life, writing: “She was the best of friends and had many loyal ones.

“Loved a good story and a nice bottle. Had a great laugh that confirmed her sense of life. Even during her decline, she could shoot off a good one-liner.”

The actress, who famously starred in sitcom It’s a Living as waitress Jan Hoffmeyer Gray, kickstarted her career in 1973 and remained active within the industry until 1998.

She appeared in every single episode of the show, which ran on ABC for two years in the 80s before appearing on syndication from 1985-1989.

She is survived by her sisters, Heide and Kim, and her second husband, Sam Freed, who she was married to for 39 years.

Together, she and Sam narrated the 2001 audiobook of The Children’s Book of Faith by William J. Bennet.

Prior to marrying Sam, she was wed to Michael Mund Youngfellow from 1968 to 1975.

She also played Joan Crawford in The Scarlett O’Hara war.

Tributes have since poured in for the star, with one person writing: “#RIP Barrie Youngfellow; the Cleveland native was very funny as Jan the waitress on all 120 episodes of ‘It’s a Living,’ the 1980s sitcom set inside a high-rise hotel restaurant in L.A.”

Another said: “I am so sorry to hear that actress Barrie Youngfellow Freed who was best known for her role as Jan Hoffmeyer Gray on It’s a Living died March 28 at the age of 75.”

A third person said: “Barrie Youngfellow was an incredible actress, so sad to hear of her passing.”

Barrie lived in Woodstock, New York, where she retired after working as an actress on stage and television.

She was regularly praised for her happy and light nature, while supported for her impressive career which spanned nearly two decades.
