BBC Breakfast’s usual format underwent a shake-up on Monday’s episode (July 18) which left Jon Kay presenting alone.
The morning programme is usually presented by Jon and his co-host Sally Nugent from Monday to Wednesday each week, but today Jon was instead live in Cambridge to report on the extreme heat warnings.
Meanwhile, Sally was nowhere to be seen, replaced by temporary host Nina Warhurst on the red sofa – though she was hardly seen on-screen.

Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood was also on the scene, but reporting from a park in Central London rather than from the BBC studios.
Even business correspondent Ben Boulos had fled the interior of the Breakfast studio to be on location in Thetford, standing beside the calm waters of a reservoir as he described how farms are coping with the heatwave.
Jon kicked off the programme by telling viewers: “Good morning, welcome to Breakfast from BBC News with me, Jon Kay, live in Cambridge, and Nina Warhurst in the studio, as millions of us prepare for what could be the highest temperatures ever recorded here in the UK.”
Parts of England are expected to hit 41 degrees Celsius, a new record for the country, with major disruption expected.
Fans of the show on social media, meanwhile, were left baffled by the move, as one took to Twitter to say: “Umm… isn’t sending your @bbcbreakfast weather/prog presenters out of the studio on the hottest ever day daft? A bit like reporting by the sea in a force 8 gale…?”
Someone else added: “#BBCBreakfast advice: stay at home and don’t travel unnecessarily. ‘So, over to our reporter we’ve sent to Cambridge, the hottest part of the land, to repeat the whole story again, only with a boater on.'”
Others were simply baffled as to why Jon was rocking a linen jacket despite the incredible heat, as one raved: “Why oh why do the presenters insist on wearing a jacket in this weather???”
“Oh hey @BBCBreakfast your guy in Cambridge does not need to be in a suit jacket in this heat!!!” someone else echoed, as a third penned: “Just take the jacket off. It’s too hot to wear it anyway!”

Chatting to Carol Kirkwood via a link in his ear, Jon reflected: “Carol, for now thank you so much. We’ll check in with you again throughout the programme this morning because Carol is going to have everything we all need to know.
“I can just feel the sun coming up as we speak to you this morning, it’s lovely for now but it’s going to get much, much hotter.”
Jon later donned a straw boater hat complete with a black ribbon to really fit in with the canal-side theme, which matched his beige linen jacket and pale blue button-up to a tee.
It comes after he was forced to stay home last week after contracting Covid-19 – just days after officially landing the job of permanent presenter, filling Dan Walker’s shoes.
