BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent missing from show just days after Dan Walker exit

Sally Nugent was missing from her usual spot on BBC Breakfast – just days after her pal Dan Walker quit the broadcaster.

BBC star Sally normally hosts the flagship morning programme on week days, but viewers tuning in on Monday (May 30) might have been surprised to find she was nowhere to be seen.

Instead, it was Sally’s colleague Nina Warhurst who stepped in to replace her on the famous red sofa next to Jon Kay, who has been anchoring the show with Sally in Dan’s absence.

Nina works as a business and consumer presenter on Breakfast, but she also stars as a stand-in presenter.

The BBC Breakfast team have a group of backup presenters who fill in for the regulars when needed – including Jon, Nina and Ben Thompson.

It is not currently clear why Sally is absent from her usual presenting spot.

It comes less than two weeks after Sally’s former co-host Dan Walker anchored his last show on BBC Breakfast – which proved to be an emotional day for Sally and the team.

Dan had hosted BBC Breakfast for six years, but his BBC career spanned a whopping 13 years in total.

The TV presenter has now joined rival broadcaster Channel 5, where he’s taken up a lead anchor role on 5 News.

The former Strictly star admitted leaving his BBC Breakfast job was a “massive decision” for him, but the channel’s offer was simply too good to refuse.

Sally has been hosting Breakfast with Jon Kay, who has taken on Dan’s role in the meantime in hosting the show with Sally.

The pair issued an update into Jon’s current role earlier this month amid mounting speculation around who will replace Walker.

Sally welcomed Jon in his temporary position before the presenter quipped he bagged the role by matching Sally on a dating app such as Tinder.

Sally said: “We said goodbye to Dan Walker, who’s off to pastures new, but we now have Jon Kay who’s here to keep me company for a little while, I hope.”

Jon said: “A few weeks, certainly. I heard you needed company,” to which Sally agreed: “I definitely like company. I don’t like being on my own.”

Kay quipped: “I got a text. Got a match. Swiped right, or is it left?”, but Sally said she didn’t know as she’s “never swiped”.

Jon admitted: “I’ve never swiped, either.”
