BBC’s Monty Don devastates fans as he confirms Gardeners’ World cancelled in shake-up

In a huge blow to his fans, BBC gardener Monty Don has announced that his iconic show Gardeners’ World has been pulled off air in a huge schedule shake-up.

Addressing his legion of loyal Twitter followers, Monty broke the bad news that viewers won’t get their usual instalment of the factual gardening programme this week.

Taking to the social media platform, Monty explained: “No Gardeners’ World this week as the Proms are occupying that slot.

“So enjoy them or get out into your own garden instead – and see you next Friday.”

But despite the assurance that the programme will be back next week, fans came out in force to share their disappointment, with one writing: “So disappointing.

“We live in stressful times… serious international health challenges, war in Europe, huge financial pressures…

“And the BBC takes away the little bit of peace and tranquility offered by GW. Doesn’t make sense.”

Another posted: “I’m currently going through a period of anxiety and pottering in the garden is my therapy!”

As a third fumed: “We pay enough licensing money to have you gracing our screens and all the Proms. Nevertheless I’m taking your advice!”

Someone else echoed: “So unfair!” as another penned: “I don’t know what the Proms are, but it’s unfair. Let them have Saturday night!”

It comes after another schedule shake-up saw the programme air a day early last week, being shown on Thursday instead of Friday evening.

On Friday (July 15), the BBC Proms are airing from 7:15pm until 9pm on BBC Two, followed by the Golf Open Highlights.

Gardening fans, however, did get the chance to check out Carol Klein’s flower show, Gardening with Carol Klein, on rival network Channel 5 from 7pm.

Gardeners’ World, meanwhile, has been running for more than 50 series, with the show first being broadcast in January 1968 and running for an incredible 53 seasons.

In 2020, the original format was switched up, with episodes stretching from a mere 30 minutes into hour long stints – much to the delight of fans.
