Coronation Street fans are certain they’ve spotted a dark secret that lawyer Adam Barlow is hiding amid the ongoing Lydia Chambers plot.
The solicitor’s life has been slowly broken apart by his university fling Lydia – who he claims not to remember at all – with Lydia destroying his marriage to Sarah and attempting to ruin his business.
Along with Adam’s car windscreen being smashed in, the solicitors’ office was hit by armed police after reports of a gun on the premises erupted.
And though Lydia claims it’s to get back at him for forgetting her among the legions of women he’s slept with, some fans are sure there’s a darker force at work – and that Adam might actually have assaulted her in their younger days.
He went as far as to scream at Lydia in the street after she told Sarah of their made-up ‘affair’.
And taking to Reddit, one eagle-eyed fan wanted to share their theory.
They penned: “Is it possible that Adam assaulted Lydia? Either deliberately or maybe they were both drunk or she was drunk and couldn’t consent?
“They keep making a point that it was in university and historic assault or rape cases that happened during university is relevant to the current day.
“It would explain why Lydia said that he completely ruined her life. Adam probably doesn’t remember it because to him it was nothing or not a problem but to Lydia it did affect her deeply. He thought it was just fun or that because they were together a bit it was fine.”
The theory went on: “Normally viewers see the other way around. The main character is usually the victim but here we see the victim come in and seem like she’s tearing someone’s life apart for no reason? So they’re trying to subvert the usual story?
“It’s been 10 years so it has to be something. If it was just about Adam getting her pregnant or a scorned lover then why make it from so long ago and would Lydia realistically hold onto it for so long?”
However, not everyone was quite as keen on such a divisive storyline – as they feared it would ruin cheeky chappy Adam’s character as it’s been built so far in the ITV soap.
Someone else replied: “While this historic rape storyline would be unique, I wouldn’t want them to destroy the Adam character with it!”
And another fan quickly argued: “I think if they did this, it would be bad for victims of this stuff to be portrayed in a negative light light Lydia is.”
But another social media user had a response to that, too, as they argued that showing both sides of the storyline would make sense – along with Lydia’s “desperation” to get Sarah away from Adam.
They posited: “I will say that I don’t think she will look unhinged if it’s revealed what he did. Because then her actions and desperation to get him away from Sarah makes sense.
“A good example would be like… Pat [Phelan]. If we saw the show 100% from Pat’s perspective then Anna [Windass] would also seem unhinged. Like she’s stalking and harassing him. But since we saw Anna’s perspective, we know what happened.”
“If it comes out that Lydia was assaulted then it can also be good way of cutting the whole “crazy” woman and scorned lover stereotype. She has a legitimate reason and is scared for other women. It just so happens we’re seeing this from Adam’s view.
“That said I’m not necessarily hoping for this to be the case because of what that would do to Adam’s character.”
Coronation Street airs from 8pm on ITV on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
