Denise Van Outen was taken aback when Channel 4 wanted ex Eddie on Celebrity Gogglebox

Denise Van Outen has revealed she was surprised when Channel 4 bosses wanted her ex Eddie to be her TV-watching partner on Celebrity Gogglebox.

The stunning TV star, 47, said she had originally thought she’d star alongside one of her “famous friends” on the hit telly-watching show.

However, she was taken aback to find out show bosses were keen on her ex Eddie joining her on the showbiz sofa – after they’d seen the pair do an interview together and thought they were “hilarious”.

The cabaret queen dished on her entry onto Celebrity Gogglebox with Eddie in her bare-all autobiography – A Bit of Me – which was published on Thursday (March 17).

In her book, the Steph’s Packed Lunch star opens up about how the pair coped with their newfound fame as a couple after entering the show, and how Eddie had to adapt to the limelight.

Speaking in the book she said: “I imagined I’d do Celebrity Gogglebox with one of my famous friends; someone I had a bit of banter with, a pairing that the viewers might get a kick out of.

“I was quite surprised when Channel 4 told me they wanted Eddie to be my TV couch potato partner. They’d seen us do an interview together and thought he was hilarious and that we’d be a great team on the show.”

The TV presenter went on to claim Eddie was “apprehensive at first” as he hadn’t done any TV work, but she advised him he’d be fine if he was just himself in front of the camera as people want authenticity.

She added: “It’s funny; it took Eddie quite a while for the penny to drop at just how famous he’d become after the show went out.”

Denise explained her and Eddie never got to see much of the public’s reaction to them on the show as they recorded the second series during the first lockdown in 2020.

She said Eddie “didn’t have a clue” about what being famous meant, but his first taste of fame came when he went out to buy fish and chips.

Apparently, her ex came back grinning as the cashier had given him extra chips as she recognised him from the show.

He allegedly told her: “‘It’s all right, this telly lark, isn’t it?'”

Denise split from commodities Eddie in January this year after a relationship of over seven years.

Breaking her silence on the relationship, she took to social media and wrote: “It saddens me to confirm that we are no longer a couple. I had to make the difficult decision not to continue in our relationship.

“I will always treasure the good times we spent together, and the memories made.”

She added: “We ask that you please respect our privacy at this time, especially for our children.”
