ITV Lorraine fans fuming over 'awkward' link from Russia crisis to Avril Lavigne

Lorraine Kelly faced a backlash from fans who slammed an “awkward” link from the crisis in Russia to an interview with punk rocker Avril Lavigne.

The ITV presenter kicked off her daytime chat show with a frightening update on the recent Russia crisis – after Russian president Putin oversaw military attacks in Ukraine.

It meant Thursday’s show (February 24) began with a bleak update for viewers as tensions mount across Europe following the Russian invasion.

However, the tense news segment was quickly followed by a strained link into an interview with pop-punk princess Avril Lavigne.

Closing the Ukraine segment, Lorraine told her correspondent: “Thank you, stay safe. It is David and Goliath and we just hope Goliath isn’t going to win this time”, referring to Putin’s Russia.

The host told viewers they’d have more updates on ITV news before saying: “Right, well life does go on and she is the original pop-punk princess. She’s sold over forty million albums. Avril Lavigne is back with brand new music.”

The Canadian Sk8r Boi songstress talked about her latest music with Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly, as well as her love life and boyfriend Mod Sun.

It was a far cry from Russian military attacks, though, and viewers slammed the link on Twitter.

One fan wrote: “Lorraine so out of her depth. Ukraine to Avril Lavigne. Awkward link. Oh dear. #cringe”

A second said: “#lorraine covering events in Ukraine… the world’s finally gone completely mad. 4 minutes in, goes over to Avril Lavigne’s new album…”, adding “*Switches off*”.

A third commented: “”Anyway life goes on” going from the news in Ukraine to a segment on Avril Lavigne, new lows”

A fourth fumed: “Hey @ITV… people are switching on their TV for news – not f***ing Avril Lavigne and Katie Price”

Grammy-winner Avril’s just returned with her new album Love Sux – her seventh studio record which will be released on February 25.

The album includes her new single Bite Me, and features a song called Love It When You Hate Me with the US singer Blackbear.
