James Blunt shares creepy reality that inspired his iconic track You’re Beautiful

James Blunt has finally shared the creepy real life events which inspired his hit 2005 track You’re Beautiful.

The singer-songwriter launched himself into the stratosphere of the music scene with his breakout track in the noughties – a song that is now played at weddings and romantic events across the globe.

But the reality is a lot darker.

Appearing on The John Bishop Show on Saturday (February 12) James shared all about the track’s creepy origin story, appearing alongside comedian Katherine Ryan and chatting to the Liverpool-born host.

Host John kicked off by asking: “For you, James, you are recognised as being a songwriter. But that song You’re Beautiful is iconic, which is quite ironic if you know the words of it – because it’s not essentially a love song?”

James agreed: “It’s not that romantic, is it, no!”

He went on: “It’s about me being high as a kite, stalking somebody else’s girlfriend on the Underground.

“But people play it at their weddings, and I’m thrilled for them.”

The host responded: “But it’s lovely to have something you’ve written – whether people have got the full intentions of it or not – that means so much to so many for so long. It’s been around for 16 years, 17 years?”

The track was released in 2005

The star had previously explained to Oprah Winfrey in 2006: “It’s kind of miserable. It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the Underground in London with her new man, who I didn’t know existed.

“She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment, but didn’t do anything about it and haven’t seen each other since.”

It has been speculated over the decades that it was James’ ex Dixie Chassay – casting assistant for the Harry Potter films – who actually inspired the song, though the crooner has never confirmed or denied this rumour.

Fans of The John Bishop Show were left stunned by the news, with one writing on Twitter: “People play ‘You’re Beautiful’ at weddings, but it’s about me stalking an ex while high – James Blunt. How about that!”

The song has a dark truth behind it

Another penned: “Just read the lyrics of @JamesBlunt You’re Beautiful- it really is about a high stalker #TheJohnBishopShow.”

It comes as the track was the butt of a joke after it was used in an attempt to disperse Covid regulation protesters in New Zealand, along with Baby Shark and tracks from Barry Manilow.

Responding to an article about Barry, James hilariously tweeted: “Give me a shout if this doesn’t work @NZPolice.”

But later in the day, James’ hit You’re Beautiful actually was played on the loudspeakers to the gathered crowd – who began an impromptu singalong.
