James Bond future sealed amid fears blockbuster movies will stop screening in cinemas

The James Bond films are not going to move from the big screen to Amazon’s streaming service – despite fears for the future of cinemas.

Franchise bosses have insisted that 007 movies will premiere first in theatres rather than be streamed, even though rights holder MGM is now owned by the web giant.

Eon Productions chiefs Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson insisted that, despite dwindling cinema audiences and the collapse of chain Cineworld, big screen viewing is here to stay.

Ms Broccoli said the Amazon deal will not change her view that “Bond is and will remain a theatrical experience”.

She also played down the rise of streaming subscribers amid a decline in cinema viewing, saying: “I’’s had a knock but it’s coming back.

“People want to go to see great pictures in the cinema.”

Her stepbrother Michael said: “We’ve seen a pretty good summer. We’ve kept up with 2019 pretty accurately.”

It comes after Ms said Broccoli the new James Bond must have a licence to thrill for at least a decade.

She also suggested long-time bookies’ favourite Idris Elba, while liked by bosses, may be out of the running for such a commitment because he has already turned 50.

She said: “We love Idris. The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off. And, when we cast Bond, it’s a 10 to 12-year commitment.

So he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing?’ Not everybody wants to do that.

“It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].”

Elba has previously said:”“I don’t think that playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals.”

Cameras could start rolling on the next Bond movie as early as winter 2023, but most likely in 2024.

Craig’s successor will be revealed next autumn at the earliest.

Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill are among British actors fancied by Coral bookmakers to become the next Bond.

Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007 came to an end with 2021’s No Time To Die, and since stepping down from the role, speculation about his replacement has been rife.
