Jeremy Kyle: Death On Daytime aired on Channel 4 tonight (March 13), which featured moving interviews with past guests and bombshell revelations from former employees and staff.
Viewers at home who were tuning into the “uncomfortable” documentary were shocked when they heard the account of one employee who alleged that guests on the show were misled over rehab stints.
Former employees were voiced by actors, and one of them claimed that the guests were told they had to “compete” for a bed in a rehab centre.
This in turn meant that the guests would act up for the cameras because they were so in need.
Speaking to the camera, the actor stated: “The lie came when you were in the studio. You would go into the corridor with them, and that’s when the lie would come.
“You’d tell the addicts and their families that there’s three other families going on the stage, it’s a fight for that one bed – Jeremy is going to pick who he wants, so you need to get out there and say what you need to say. It was to get more emotion on the stage.”
The actor who was concealing the identity of the real life employee was then asked whether or not show bosses knew about these lies, to which they replied: “Yeah.”
Another former employee of the show said: “We were always acting, and you were always winding people up. You were wound up yourselves.
“It was insane and what was awful is when you would have a more normal family, you would always s**t yourself because you’d be under this impression that the working class people weren’t as clever and they wouldn’t question you.”
Viewers at home couldn’t believe the shock claims, with many taking to social media to share their opinions, with one writing: “Shocking watching the exploitative Jeremy Kyle doc on C4. Luring places at rehab over someone’s head like a prize in a raffle. Disgusting. #channel4.”
Another penned: “Making families compete for rehab beds? The actual f**k? I knew Jeremy Kyle was appalling, but f***ing hell.”
While a third said: “Places at rehab offered like prizes on a game show with emotional distress earning you bonus points.”
Elsewhere viewers were taken aback by how “uncomfortable” the show made them feel.
One viewer said: “This Jeremy Kyle doc is such an uncomfortable watch – so awful.”
And another added: “The Jeremy Kyle doc at 9pm on Channel 4 is an uncomfortable, damning watch. Hopefully television like this won’t get made again.”
The two-part series aired at 9pm on Sunday (March 13) and is set to conclude on Monday (March 14).
The moving two-parter covers the downfall of the controversial daytime show which faced the axe in 2019 after 14 years on TV, following one guest’s tragic suicide.
