Meghan Markle has faced a major pushback as Netflix has axed her first animated series, Pearl.
Prince Harry’s wife was executive producing the television series with David Furnish but Netflix giants have made major cuts, reports Deadline.
US media outlets reported that the streaming giant are making a string of cuts after a drop in subscriber numbers over recent years.
However, Pearl was still in early development but bosses are still keen to work with Archwell and has a deal for a number of projects including Heart of Invictus.
The new series will follow Harry at the recent Invictus Games in The Hague.
Meghan and Harry are yet to comment on the cancellation of Pearl.
Sources close to the axing told Deadline that Netflix bosses had warned producers to take projects elsewhere if they were still in the early days of development.
Meghan and Harry announced they would be venturing into television production as part of their Archewell Productions company following their departure as senior working royals.
Pearl, executive produced by Meghan and Elton John’s husband David Furnish was supposed to be the first animated series from the royal.
It would have been Meghan’s first role as executive producer since the former actress stepped down from her role of Rachel Zane in the hit US legal drama, Suits.
The series was announced in July 2021 with Meghan saying it will document the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who finds inspiration from historical female figures.
She said: “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges.
“I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.
“David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today.”
Netflix struck a deal with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex back in September 2020, worth an eye-watering $100million (£79.5 million) in order to work with them.
