Nicolas Cage says he was convinced he was an alien as a child.

The American actor, who has starred in films such as Gone in 60 Seconds, was surprised when a doctor confirmed he had “normal organs and a normal skeleton” like everyone else.

Cage, 58, told Rampstyle magazine he had trouble relating to people and was socially awkward.

He explained: “My father told me he felt like he had to introduce himself to me because I was such an alien.

“I was shocked the day I went to the doctor’s office as a child and I found out that I had normal organs and a normal skeleton because I was certain I was from another planet.”

The Oscar winner added: “I had difficulties connecting with other people. When I saw David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth, I realised I needed to do something. So I became an actor.”

The eccentric actor was born Nicolas Kim Coppola, nephew of The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, Cage adopted his working name to avoid nepotism on the job and claims to have gotten inspiration from Marvel superhero Luke Cage.

His unusual antics are often making headlines as his celebrity success has allowed him to make a series of bizarre purchase.

These include dinosaur fossils, shrunken heads, albino cobras, exotic artworks, a supposedly haunted mansion, and a very strange mausoleum in New Orleans.

The Hollywood star purchased the opulent cement pyramid tomb to ensure he had the perfect place to rest for eternity when the time comes.

It sticks out among the other archaic gravesites of the famous St. Louis Cemetery No.1, which is also the holds the tomb of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen.

Cage is currently filming in Ireland for his new movie, Sand and Stones

The star, who is currently married to his fifth wife, Riko Shibata, is staying in the five-star Powerscourt Hotel in Co Wicklow with scenes also set be soon filmed in Dublin.

The Leaving Las Vegas and Con Air star is playing the lead role in the post-apocalyptic thriller and the superstar actor jetted in from Los Angeles last weekend to begin filming the movie last Monday.

The movie is set in a sparsely populated future world where normal life has vanished. Cage will play Paul, a man who ekes out his existence on his farm with twin sons Thomas and Joseph.
