Football legend Michael Owen has revealed producers on The Masked Singer asked him to take singing lessons before he performed on the ITV show.
The former England soccer star became the latest celebrity to unveil themselves on the quirky ITV talent show – with fans finally finding out he was Doughnut on Saturday night (February 29).
In a shock double elimination, Michael unmasked himself on stage along with actress Jaime Winstone, who was Firework.
Despite being a fan favourite, the football pundit confessed he was the “worst singer” to ever appear on the show, and now it seems the producers helped him out behind the scenes.
Michael spilled the beans on his Masked Singer stint whilst appearing on ITV’s Lorraine – including how frightened he was of singing on stage.
Speaking about what it was like to step out on stage, show host Lorraine Kelly asked Michael: “Was it scary?”
Michael replied: “Just watching that montage right there, I can’t stop smiling. It was so much fun, but I cannot tell you there was no smiling on my face as I was about to walk out on stage. It was petrifying!”
Liverpool legend Michael’s last performance was a crowd-pleasing rendition of Five’s 1998 rap hit Everybody Get Up.
He also sang Sweet Caroline, Eye Of The Tiger and Spice Up Your Life.
Speaking about his last rap, Michael said: “I did a rap at the end which was quite difficult.”
He proceeded to explain how producers would “tailor” songs to fit each star, and how they asked him to take singing lessons before the episodes aired.
He went on: “I think they tailor the songs. They put them in front of you again and they ask you to sing and do a couple of singing lessons, let’s say, see if you can do it okay, but I think they picked a few good types for me.
“Real Crowd-pleasers, and that’s what the character was, a real crowd-pleaser type of character. That’s what got me through. “
Lorraine then mentioned that it was Michael’s kids that inspired him to enter the series in the first place.
The football icon answered: “Yeah, you know you get offered one or two things in life and you show the kids and say ‘look I could have done this’ and then they’re like ‘why didn’t you, dad?’.
“So anyway, when this one came through I thought ‘I’ll show them, see what they think’.”
Despite fans loving his renditions, he apologised to fans on Twitter as he exited the show.
He said: “Finally, I can apologise for burning your ears these last few weeks. My kids badgered me into doing The Masked Singer, but I have to say it was a great experience and a whole lot of fun.”
Hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, the semi-finals of the competition will take place this weekend – judged by Rita Ora, Davina McCall, and Mo Gilligan.
