Al Murray not invited back to his school after teachers left unimpressed with visit

Al Murray says his old school has not invited him back after he gave a speech telling pupils exam results were “not that important”.

The stand-up, 55, had been asked to give advice to kids at Bedford School but teachers were less than impressed with his words of wisdom. Al, best-known for his Pub Landlord character, said: “I started off by saying, ‘Here’s the good news – don’t worry about your A-levels, they’re really not that important’.

“The headmaster got up and said, ‘Well actually they do really matter’. The school never asked me back.

“I wanted to say: ‘You might be stressing out about exams now, but one day, they’ll be five years ago, then 10 years ago.” Al reckons attending a boys’ boarding school shaped his comedy career.

He added: “You’re one person at home and another person at school. “Having two personas influenced my comedy, creating a character.”

Al was taught at an all-boys boarding school which he says proved useful when he began his comedy career. But he doesn’t have happy memories of his school days.

He recently told Big Issue: “I didn’t want to fit in with the other boys and that determination, that bloody-mindedness, has served me incredibly well as a comic. But I’d rather not have gone to a boys’ boarding school.

“I don’t know if it’s helped me as a person. It certainly would have been really fantastic to get to know more girls. I’m sure my attitude to women might be quite different now if I had.”

“I heard Adrian Edmondson talking about this, what boarding did to him. You’re one person at home and another person at school. And they’re very different people. I don’t know, maybe that’s the training that prepares you for the different worlds of work and home. Or maybe it turns you into a two faced shit.”
