Alison Hammond reveals co-star gave her ‘VIP treatment’ on first day but ‘never again’

Alison Hammond has revealed that Paul Hollywood gave her a “bit of VIP treatment” on her first day of filming The Great British Bake Off.

The This Morning star appeared on The One Show on Friday (September 27) alongside her GBBO co-host Noel Fielding as they opened up about working together on the new series of the Channel 4 baking competition. Conversation turned to Alison’s bond with judge Paul.

Alison, who previously appeared on a celebrity version of Bake Off, has replaced Little Britain star Matt Lucas as presenter and told hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp about her experience on the programme so far.

She explained: “So on the first day he asked ‘Do you want a lift to the hotel?’ so I said ‘Yeah, great’ and he’s got a really nice car – a little bit of a Lamborghini – and I’ve never been in one of them before.” Noel interrupted: “It was like Batman’s car wasn’t it?”

Alison agreed: “It was like Batman’s car. I mean it was a struggle for me to get in first of all. I had to get myself into the car first, it’s like it’s on the floor. So unlady like, my legs were wide open.

“I finally got in and i said ‘Where shall i put my bag? I’ve got my bag with me’ and he just got someone else to take it. So I got into the car, let’s just say i’m never going to do it again, it was the most frightening ride i’ve ever had in my entire lie. It was so scary.”

The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp quizzed Alison on her new presenting job

It comes after Bake Off fans praised “joyous” Alison after she made her debut last week. It saw a fresh batch of 12 amateur bakers being set challenges by judges Paul and Dame Prue Leith. Viewers took to Twitter, now X, to share their thoughts on Alison’s introduction to the popular Channel 4 programme – and it’s safe to say the Birmingham-born star went down a storm with fans.

One person wrote: “Alison Hammond is the best best best thing to happen to GBBO since the move to channel four. I am so PLEASED. This series is off to a flying start. #GBBO2023,” while another added: “Alison Hammond has really bought some sunshine and joy to the tent! Love her so much #GBBO.”

A third person commented: “So happy @BritishBakeOff is back and absolutely adore Alison Hammond,” while another tweeted: “#GBBO was an absolute joy tonight. Alison Hammond looks as if she’s been in the tent for years, and clearly loving it. A great bunch of bakers this year, should be a cracking series.”

Alison took over from comedian Matt, who announced his departure from the show in December last year after three seasons. Matt, who joined the show in 2020, attributed his decision to his busy schedule. “But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects,” he said in a statement. “So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.”

The One Show airs weeknights on BBC One at 7pm
