Antiques Roadshow guest floored as bottle of booze is actually ‘treasure’ – and worth fortune

At some point in our lives we’ve all be gifted something that just looks too good to open – but eventually most of us will give in to the the temptation.

But one woman literally had the last laugh after a gift given to her husband on his birthday skyrocketed in value because she didn’t open it. In the recent episode of the US version of Antiques Roadshow, which airs on PBS, the woman took an old bottle of booze in to be appraised.

She explained that her husband’s family had passed over the Rémy Martin Cognac Decanter to them back in 1959 but it had already been preserved many years before that. “This bottle of cognac was given to my father in law on his 50th birthday from a Basque friend of his,” she said.

“That was in 1959. He and my mother in law kept it and gave it to my husband, their son, on his 50th birthday in the year 2000. Right, with instructions that it was too pretty to ever open.”

The bottle was originally made by Baccarat in 1938 and it’s never been opened because of it’s stunning design. But the guest didn’t even realise it had value until her son in law found it and told them they have a “treasure” here.

And he wasn’t wrong as the expert explained: “It’s a very interesting piece. I have to say, I was surprised when I opened the box to see what was inside. Rémy Martin is a particularly fine cognac and this being a vintage cognac makes it rather special.

“But it’s not just the contents of the bottle that makes it so special. The bottle itself is made, we’re fairly sure, by baccarat, who are well known makers, and it’s a particularly fine example.

“This makes it a collectible not just for its quality of brandy, but also because it’s such an amazing piece of glass. I also noticed that you have the original stopper. The value of it is enhanced greatly by the fact that you’ve never actually opened it.”

He estimated that the bottle of booze would be worth around £8,000 – leaving the woman stunned. She cackled with laughter after hearing the price tag, adding: “I just can’t believe that. I just can’t.
