Antiques Roadshow guest floored as ‘mystery’ bag ‘left by stranger’ has whopping value

Antiques Roadshow is often filled with family heirlooms or things that people have picked up in charity shops – but Sunday night’s episode had a slight twist.

One glorious gold bag was brought out to the professionals and as the guest shared his story, BBC viewers at home were in awe. He said: “My mother-in-law got a phone call out of the blue from London to say there was a safety deposit box and would we like to go down and collect it.”

He explained nobody in the family knew anyone in London, adding it was a “total mystery” and they “thought it was a hoax”. However the bank told them it wasn’t and invited them to come and collect it.

There were “several items” in the box, but one of which was the gold bag he brought to auction. Professional Susan Rumfitt explained that it was “gorgeous” and a “heavy metal” with a mark on the frame confirming it was gold.

They added: “It dates from around the 1920s which was such a glamorous time.” The bag was also estimated at coming in between £4,000 and £6,000.

Fans of the show immediately rushed to X to share their thoughts about both the bag and the mystery. One user wrote: “9 grand for a bag, not bad eh!”

Another said: “So a safety deposit box, left by a mysterious stranger, what else was left? Gold bag worth £6,000? This is the start of a thriller.” Meanwhile a third said: “I’d love that little gold bag.”

They’re yet to solve the mystery

The guest explained that their mystery remained unanswered because the bank are unable to disclose information about the original owner. But with one wild story comes another, as it’s not the first time the BBC show has been hit with an unusual find.

Just last week one guest was left with bewildered after discovering the value of sculptures he found in a “free bin”. The collectables were coming in at upwards of £500 each – making it quite a good bin bargain find.
