BBC Breakfast star takes savage swipe at Mae Muller’s Eurovision result

This morning’s BBC Breakfast hosts took a swipe at Mae Muller’s performance last night at the Eurovision in Liverpool after she placed second to last.

Rachel Burden sat alongside co-star Ben Thompson discussing the night which saw the UK earn just 24 points for ‘I Wrote a Song’.

“I just don’t think it was a song build for that Eurovision stage in the end,” said Rachel.

Ben was in agreement that the song didn’t stand out among the other acts, despite being featured in the strategic position of last in the running order.

“There were a lot of similar sort of acts as well, Really good powerful songs from great female singers,” said Ben.

Mae Muller had been chosen to represent the country on partly account of her Tik Tok following, something that helped put Sam Ryder in second position last year.

However, this time round follower counts was not enough to see Mae similarly placed on the first half of the board.

Instead previous winner, Loreen from Sweden took the crown with her song ‘Tattoo’, closely followed by fan favourite, ‘Cha Cha Cha’ from Finland’s Käärijä.

However, Ben admitted he wasn’t exactly a fan of the winning track due to its lack of originality.

“It’s quite similar to the one that she won with last time,” said Ben.

The co-stars also revealed that they had stayed up to watch the show despite their early morning start for BBC Breakfast.

“We’re not feeling sore,” said Rachel.

“We’re just a bit tired,” said Ben

The grand final of the international song contest was held on Saturday night (May 13) in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine and was presented by Hannah Waddingham, Graham Norton, Alesha Dixon, and Julia Sanina.

The next Eurovision is likely to be held in Sweden, and will coincide with ABBA’s 50th anniversary of winning the contest that shot them to worldwide fame.
