BBC Breakfast turns awkward after TV guest fails to recognise major star

BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty welcomed on young tennis player Joanie Melady onto the show.

On Thursday (June 29), the hosts surprised her with a videotape from tennis legend Andy Murray.

Though things turned awkward when she failed to recognise him and said that male tennis players were “bleurgh”.

Host Naga asked her: “Who are the big names that you kind of like?”

“Emma Radcanu,” she answered.

Though Naga was looking for her to mention Andy, as that was linked to her surprise celebrity message.

“What about any of the guys?” Naga asked.

For Joanie to reply “bleugh”.

Naga cringed: “Okay, well, that’s gonna kind of make the next moment a little bit awkward, but very, very funny.

“So I want you to look at this screen over here. See that monitor on the camera three, because someone very special has sent you a message.

“Don’t say bleurgh about it until after you come off breakfast. Let’s just have a look this is for you.”

The studio then played the message from Andy and he said: “Hi, Johnny. I just wanted to say congratulations for winning your first tennis tournament. Keep up the good work.”

With Joanie looking none the wise, Naga asked: “So do you know you know who that is?”

While the young player looked blank, Naga whispered “Andy Murray”.

After she realised, Joanie was shocked and seemed to soak up the moment from the tennis icon and said that she “maybe did like him”.

The host then replayed the message for her, with Charlie saying: “Let’s do that again so you can take it in properly.”

Joanie looked much more pleased the second time around, with the studio all agreeing that Andy is a “nice guy”.

Joanie, from South Oxfordshire, was born with a congenital limb difference, meaning that her left arm did not fully develop before birth.

She said that people “often go easy on me” but declared she “doesn’t want them to”.
