BBC newsreader, 75, hailed 'legend' by viewers after mispronouncing rapper Jay Z's name

BBC newsreader Nick Owen has been called a “legend” by viewers after getting Jay Z’s name wrong live on air.

The 75-year-old star hilariously mispronounced the rapper’s name wrong during Friday’s (January 13) instalment of Midlands Today.

He had been reading from an autocue about a father and son duo who have become TikTok stars and was left confused by the script.

After saying “Jay Zed” rather than “Jay Zee”, he returned after the segment to correct his blunder.

Nick hilariously assured audiences he was “seriously down with the kids”, while making a hand gesture.

The video was shared online and has since caught the attention of social media users.

Radio 1 DJ Katie Thistleton gushed: “Ohhh he must be protected at all costs!'”

Podcaster Scott Bryan penned: “‘OH MY GOD Watch this report by Nick Owens on Midlands Today. Stick to the end.”

Blue Peter host Richie Driss chimed: “I want to give him a hug.”

Another fan penned: “@nickowentv is a midlands news legend”

someone else wrote: “Should get a knighthood for this. I’m starting the campaign, today.”

Others expressed their love for Nick, with the presenter even responding to some of their comments.

Hosting Midlands Today since 1997, when reflecting on his nearly 45-year career last year, Nick said that there were “moments when things have gone wrong and you lose contracts or programmes come to an end and you keep battling on”.

He told Shropshire Star: “With hindsight, however, I’ve had some wonderful highlights and I’ve been privileged to meet loads of wonderful people, so I think I’ve been very fortunate.”

Nick found fame in the 1980s on the TV-am breakfast show after beginning his career on regional newspapers.

He is thought to be the inspiration for Steve Coogan’s spoof chat show presenter, Alan Partridge.
