BBC's Gethin Jones nearly died filming Blue Peter as mountain climb took horror turn

Gethin Jones has revealed he nearly died while filming Blue Peter after he almost lost his bearings on the side of a mountain in Africa and almost fell off.

The BBC Morning Live host had been scaling the side of Spitzkoppe, the tallest friction climb in Namibia, when things took a terrifying turn and he almost plummeted to his death.

Gethin, 45, spoke to Daily Star ahead of his Red Nose Day dancing challenge that will see him attempt 24 hours of dancing in the Morning Live Studio from Thursday (March 16) until Red Nose Day on Friday.

Recalling his near-fatal fall, Gethin said: “I almost came off Spitzkoppe. Tallest friction climb in Namibia. I almost came off the side because of the wind.

“I had to go up a second time to get a wide shot. Classic Blue Peter. The second time the wind picked up and I almost lost my bearings and fell off the side of the mountain.”

Sarcastically acting out the chat he had with the producer which could have gotten him killed, he added: “‘Can you do it again for the wide shot?’ ‘Yeah, sure!’”

But it’s not the only scrape Gethin suffered at Blue Peter, which he presented from 2005 until 2008, because he could have been eaten by an alligator in Louisiana.

He noted: “I got attacked by an alligator in Louisana swamp. That wasn’t fun.”

Gethin said he toured a whopping 31 countries during his stint, but it came at a cost as he suffered “six broken bones” as well as his two near-death experiences.

The Welsh star joked: “I’m going to be the most boring grandfather, I cannot give you a highlight! I’ve been pushed to my limits. It was more than a show to me.”

Gethin’s dancing challenge is a supersized version of Morning Live’s Strictly Fitness segment which sees him complete one-minute routines.

Red Nose Day will air Friday March 17th from 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
