Community Presents review: Two Door Cinema Club and The Wombats prove indie rock is alive

Community Presents festival turned London’s Crystal Palace Park into the perfect pit of indie rock ruckus.

This year on Friday 9 July, the all-day party descended on South London’s scorching Crystal Palace Park instead of its larger Finsbury Park home.

Indie kings Two Door Cinema Club and The Wombats returned as rightful headliners after tearing it up at Finsbury Park last summer, and they were in good company with The Vaccines and Sea Girls.

It was no-brainer, really, for my friends and I who have made Community festival our latest tradition.

The Vaccines are veterans of the UK festival circuit – you’d be hard-pushed to find a line-up without them in it these days – and it could not have been clearer.

The boys were totally at home on stage ripping through classics like If You Wanna, Wetsuit and Post Break-Up Sex as well as their newer tracks.

Singer Justin couldn’t stop smiling throughout the set, a simple thing, perhaps, but when you see a band you like having just as much fun as their fans it’s infectious.

It would be remiss not to mention one glorious moment when a single. tiny cloud eclipsed the sun for 10 seconds and got a roaring cheer from the crowd who were glad to have a quick break from dying of heat exhaustion.

if I recall correctly, Justin reminded us all about the importance of suncream, and the man was absolutely right; if The Vaccines have taught us anything it’s to put a wetsuit on and your factor 50.

Up next were Liverpool legends The Wombats, who have an immense arsenal of bangers at their disposal and the lads were happy to fire them all at us.

Greek Tragedy, Backfire at the Disco, Moving to New York, Turn, Lemon to a Knife Fight; you name it and they played it.

The Wombats featured heavily on our pre-drink playlists at university so it felt like a kind of spiritual (un)cleansing seeing them live again.

It was a hot enough day already, but The Wombats brought even more heat

Shout out to frontman Matthew Murphy and his heavenly bright-coloured shirt.

Without further adieu, it was time for Two Door Cinema Club to take to the stage and tip their Community Fest crowns to the masses.

The Northern Irish heroes took us back to their anthemic 2010 debut album Tourist History and through a career-spanning set that showed just how far they’ve come.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard the drop in Eat That Up, It’s Good For You before a night out in York.

Two Door reign supreme

Two Door really are masters of their craft, and that craft to me is a euphoric symphony of soaring guitar licks.

What You Know, the final boss of all indie pop anthems, went off with a massive bang on what can only be described as a cracking day of beers, mates and music.

And it’s no surprise it was a success, because my friend – and music PR extraordinaire – Kat Ferris and her team at Premier know how to put on a great event.

There’s a reason we still go to see these bands that soundtracked our teens, and it’s not just for nostalgia purposes, their music is great and it’s still relevant.

Community Presents proved indie rock is still alive and kicking; roll on next year.
