Corrie Spider star admits being ‘too enamoured with party scene’ during first soap stint

Coronation Street’s Martin Hancock admitted that he was “too enamoured with the party scene” when he first joined the ITV soap in his youth.

Over the past few weeks, fans have been glued to their screens as things continue to blossom between his character Spider Nugent and his onscreen partner Toyah Battersby (played by Georgia Taylor).

The on-again off-again couple have been dating for more than 25 years throughout the longest-running soap after they fell head over heels for each other as teenagers in 1997.

But it’s fair to say the pair have had a rollercoaster of a time together including Toyah being raped by one of Spider’s friends, living together in London and Toyah facing life behind bars for the murder of her late husband Imran.

Now, the actor has lifted the lid on some of the wild nights out he had with his co-stars when he first joined the soap in the 1990s.

In an interview with Daily Star and other publications, Martin confessed that it was nice to return to the Cobbles in older age after putting his partying days behind him.

He told us: “I’ve enjoyed it immensely coming back but he’s been great and you know when I was younger I was a bit too enamoured with the party scene.

“So it’s nice to come back as an older and wiser person and just really enjoy it for what it is, which is a great show with great people.”

When asked if he would want to return to the show for the fifth time, the actor immediately replied: “Yes”.

He added: “I’ve said it the first time around and the second time around and the third time around and this is the fourth time now and yeah, of course I love this show.”

The actor went on to add how he would like to finally tie the knot with Toyah and settle down in Weatherfield for good.

The 54-year-old continued: “I think it has to be a Toyah storyline doesn’t it? Because there’s always going to be that there.

“I think it’d be nice in the future maybe he’ll open up a cycling shop or something like that where he refurbs or recycles thongs you know.”

It’s fair to say fans are hopeful to see the lovebirds reunite in the future, but only time will tell if they will.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 from 9pm and on ITVX.
