Emmerdale fans moan ‘hard to understand’ as fan favourite returns after leaving village

Emmerdale fans were left rubbing their heads during the latest visit to the village as Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) got in touch with husband Sam Dingle (James Hootton).

Lydia recently learned the truth about Craig Reed’s (Ben Addis) murder. After he raped Lydia, Craig made a number of enemies in the village. So when he was dying on the floor after being kicked in the face by Kim Tate’s (Claire King) horse, it was hardly a surprise when she conspired with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) to leave him for dead.

As Sam Dingle (James Hooton) attacked Craig prior to his death, Lydia believed he was to blame and struggled to forgive him. During Thursday’s episode (December 7), Kim revealed that she was partly responsible for what happened to Craig leaving Sam reeling.

Having believed he was responsible for his death, Sam hit out at Kim as he was almost sent to prison. But she insisted she wouldn’t have let that happen. At the end of Friday’s (December 8) episode, Lydia opened up to Sam about her struggles. She explained she was going to stay with her mum for a while and therefore wouldn’t be spending Christmas with their family.

However, she video called Sam and Samson Dingle (Sam Hall) during Monday’s (December 11) episode of the ITV soap, leaving fans wondering why she left in the first place. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “Hard to understand why Lydia left with the Dingle family like that.” Another added: “Please don’t say we are getting daily Lydia phone calls.”

A third person agreed: “I don’t understand Lydia.” Someone else agreed: “I’m sick of this Lydia story.” A fifth person said: :Why did Lydia leave to “look after her mum” but then in a scene? Normally means the actor or actress is on a break… seems weird.” Packing her bags, Lydia told stepson Samson that she won’t be around for Christmas – but will eventually return. Samson and Sam were gutted with the twist but accepted that if it helps Lydia, then that is what she needs to do.

Elsewhere in the village, Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) struggled to come to terms with what his recent Parkinson’s diagnosis might means for him. At the beginning of the episode he was setting off for the group – but when he got there he was scared to face it and sat outside in his car, tears streaming down his face.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm
