Ethan Hawke directs own daughter Maya’s sex scene but insists it’s ‘not weird’

Ethan Hawke has directed his daughter Maya’s sex scenes for a new Hollywood biopic – but insists it “wasn’t weird”.

Maya Hawke, who rose to fame in Netflix series Stranger Things, is starring in Wildcat: the story of late US writer Flannery O’Connor.

And with that role comes a whole host of raunchy scenes as O’Connor imagines acting out steamy scenes from her novels, with Maya in the titular role.

Meanwhile, her dad – Daybreakers star Ethan – was in the director’s chair. Yikes.

Multiply that awkwardness by 100 and you’ll probably get close to what Maya was feeling as he yelled “Cut!” and “Action!” during those racy moments.

But the pair were totally cool with it, according to an interview they did with Variety.

Instead, they were more worried about the two stars who played the men romping with Maya’s character.

Ethan said: “We needed to take care of Rafael and Cooper. I think it was weird for them. We were so comfortable with it, I couldn’t care less.”

Maya then added: “We made sure to have an intimacy co-ordinator on set for them. So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on…”

As Ethan quipped: “…by some creepy dad.”

Maya went on to praise her co-star father, adding: “My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.”

It comes after Maya admitted she lied to her dad about losing her virginity – claiming she “went to therapy” instead.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, Maya revealed: “ I lied about where I … I said I was going to therapy and I really went to lose my virginity. I can’t believe I just said that but that is true.”

Her dad was “very, very upset” at the time, with Maya revealing: “He gave me a really hard time. He went ‘where were you? where did you go?’. And I said ‘how am I supposed to have secrets if I’m not allowed to tell lies?’”

It might not be so weird for Maya, who has grown up with two very famous parents.

Her parents, Ethan and Uma Thurman, met on the set of Gattaca back in 1997 but divorced in 2005 after welcoming Maya and her sibling Levon.

Later, Ethan remarried, tying the knot with Ryan Shawhughes in 2008 and welcoming two daughters with his second wife.
