Eurovision host Rylan has bizarre phobia of fish after supermarket incident as a child

Eurovision host Rylan Clark has a phobia of fish after being pushed onto a supermarket fish counter as a child.

The 34-year-old TV star – who is heading up the BBC’s coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest this week along with Scott Mills – has been scarred for life by a fateful trip for the big, weekly shop.

Rylan was wandering the aisles with his older sibling Jamie and mum Linda – who he appears on Celebrity Gogglebox with – when his brother shoved him right into the fresh fish counter and he came face-to-face with a scary looking hake sitting on the ice.

Since that day with the hake – known for their protruding teeth – Rylan hasn’t been able to eat fish and he only likes to look at them from afar.

He told the Not My Bagg podcast: “I don’t like things out of the sea, I’m frightened of fish. I won’t eat fish

“I don’t mind looking at them from afar. They’ve not get legs, I don’t trust it. I won’t eat fish.

“My brother when I was younger pushed me on the fish counter as a kid.

“You ever seen a hake in real life? Worse teeth than I’ve got and literally I fell face first onto a hake as a child.“Imagine that as a child. I won’t eat fish since.”

It comes after Rylan said that Eurovision helped him get over his divorce from husband Dan Neal.

It left Rylan so broken he had to pull out of doing coverage for the BBC at the 2021 contest.

But when he made a comeback at last year’s show in Italy, it gave him the boost he needed.

Rylan told me: “Last year I needed to get away from the UK and the Eurovision bubble was perfect for that.

“It was what I needed on a personal level. Being there was a full circle moment for me. It was like, ‘I’m back, I’m ready to go’.

“That’s why Eurovision is so important to me. If you cut me open, it’s there.”

Being in Italy gave him a chance to move on from his divorce by having some flirty fun with the locals.

And as he was away from home, he didn’t have to worry about getting recognised when he was letting loose.

Rylan said:”“I can’t go slagging it about – I’ve got to be on my best behaviour.

I’ll be pining for the nights out I usually have. But I’ll still go out.”
