Eurovision’s Mae Muller convinced late grandad is supporting her from beyond the grave

Eurovision hopeful Mae Muller reckons her grandad is supporting her from beyond the grave.

The singer, 25, was a baby when Robert died. But years on, she feels a connection between them.

And she’s convinced he’ll watch her fly the flag for the UK in Liverpool this weekend.

Mae says: “My grandad passed away when I was about three months old.

“So I haven’t been able to talk to him about doing Eurovision. But I am hoping he is here with me and he is looking down. I hope he is proud of me. I am sure he is.

”Holocaust survivor Robert lived an incredible life that saw him flee Nazi Germany alone when he was just 12 before settling in the UK. He is a big inspiration for Mae who is determined to make him proud. She says:

“I have been doing this for six years now. There has been a journey to get to this point and I think he would have been very proud of what I’m doing.“

“My whole family is really excited to see me getting to experience these amazing things.

“When I got on stage at Liverpool Arena for my first rehearsal, I took a moment, looked out and thought: ‘Girl, give yourself a pat on the back, you’ve got this far, it’s amazing’.”

Mae has been working around the clock to fine-tune her performance of I Wrote A Song, even hiring a space in Liverpool for extra rehearsals.

“I’ve been going over and over the performance,” she says. “I want to be prepared. I’ve sung the song hundreds of times and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It means I will be able to enjoy it on the night.“I haven’t had any injuries so far… touch wood. I’m in one piece. I’m hoping it stays that way.

“I always have honey, lemon and ginger tea before a performance. It calms me and gets my vocal cords ready to go. And then I like to have five minutes of zen before I go on stage.”

Mae will be one of 26 acts competing at the final in front of more than 160million viewers and she admits: “There are nerves. It would be strange if there weren’t. But more than anything, I’m just excited.”

Even internet trolls aren’t getting to her. Some fans have made negative comments about her performances at pre-contest events.

Mae says: “Social media can sometimes be a bit tricky. If anyone wants to be mean, it’s so easy for them to do that.“

“But whenever there are moments like that, I find a way to make light of it. That has helped me.

“So I’ve really enjoyed being able to use social media. It’s a way for me to connect with the fans really easily.”

Whatever the result, she still plans to celebrate after Saturday’s final with a boozy party alongside Eurovision presenter Rylan Clark, 34.

She says: “I’ve already had a night out with Rylan since I got to Liverpool. That was my rite of passage and I feel like I’m part of the Eurovision family now.

“So we’ve got to celebrate somehow after the final. Rylan is one of the best people to do that with. We’ll definitely be out on the town.”
