GMB’s Richard Madeley branded ‘cringe’ as he clashes with Gary Lineker on air

Good Morning Britain made for uncomfortable viewing on Tuesday (May 23) after Richard Madeley quizzed Gary Lineker on his previous controversial tweets.

During the latest episode, ex-footballer Gary appeared via video link to discuss the return of his new game show Sitting On A Fortune and an award for his stance on the migrant crisis.

But Richard, who presented Tuesday’s programme alongside Susanna Reid, couldn’t help but mention Gary’s Twitter rant on immigration from earlier this year.

Richard, 67, claimed the BBC broadcaster compared the UK Government to 1930s Nazi Germany in his tweets but Gary quickly hit back and accused the presenter of “misrepresenting him”.

Gary, 62, then argued he was specifically talking about the language he felt uncomfortable with such as terms including “invasions, swarms, rapists, criminals” and said that it could have been “kinder” at the time.

The sports presenter said: “This is where the furore has come from, newspaper headlines. What I did was I said some of the language used was not dissimilar to that of 30s Germany.”

But as things started to get tense between the pair, viewers headed straight over to Twitter to share their thoughts on their awkward exchange.

One GMB viewer wrote: “Richard Madeley on GMB stop trying to twist Gary Lineker’s words on his tweet two months ago. Journalist? I’ve seen chimps with better interviewing skills.”

Another fumed: “Has anyone ever interviewed Madeley on why he nicked bottles of wine from a supermarket years ago? Kick him off GMB vile journalist!”

A third chimed: “I think Gary Lineker handled himself well with that idiot Richard Madeley. You could tell Gary was not happy with the questions but still answered them in a measured way.”

While a fourth added: “Richard Madeley makes me cringe. I always end up wanting to hide behind the sofa when he’s on.”

Later on in the conversation, Susanna went on to highlight the fact Gary previously hosted a refugee in his home.

But Richard again went on to discuss the “motivation” behind the star’s Twitter use.

Keeping it light-hearted, Gary explained: “My motivation is I quite enjoy it! I like writing I always have done.”
