Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway shares rare glimpse of ill husband Derek at home

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has shared a rare glimpse of her ill husband Derek, who became Britain’s longest Covid-19 sufferer spending 13 months in hospital after contracting the virus in 2020.

Kate, 55, also paid tribute to his carer Jake, who appeared in the snap lovingly holding a smiling Derek’s hand as he lay in bed at home.

Addressing her 1.1 million followers, Kate wrote: “Many of you will remember Jake who cared for Derek when he first came out of hospital in April 21 – from the documentary #caringforderek, so you will know what a wonderful healthcare professional he is.

“But have just found out he’s also an amazing musician – under the name @sencymiller.x – He’s just released a song called #okukuseku (check it out in his bio) – which no surprise is full of love & inspiration to keep going & never give up.

“The world of carers never fails to surprise me with their depths of talent, thoughtfulness and motivation #happyfriday all.”

Fans were quick to show their support for Kate, Derek and indeed Jake, with one commenting: “What a wonderful photo what would we do without these wonderful people much love send to you all.”

Another wrote: “Kate, I just want to say that I hope you know how incredibly inspirational your family are. You are incredibly strong. There is no words to describe the strength you have. Keep strong and know we’re all so proud of you and your family.”

A third added: “Hope Derek is well Kate, sending love to you all, what a lovely pic and story. My mum had amazing carers too, what would we do without them, worth their weight in gold.”

And a fourth said: “Such an inspiration. A wonderful carer for Derek and hopefully now will get his reward on the back of this new song. I hope he does well. My best wishes to Derek and to you and your family.”

Earlier this week, meanwhile, Kate was widely praised following her interview with former Health Secretary, Matt Hancock.

After Hancock was grilled by co-hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley about breaking his own rule and his I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here stint, Kate took over and quizzed the disgraced ex-MP.

Kate addressed the moment he claimed to have “fallen in love” with his former aide Gina Coladangelo and was caught in a “tight embrace” in CCTV footage which was later leaked.

“I suppose the problem [upset at his rule-breaking] is you were the Health Secretary,” she started. “Because at that time it mattered and my husband Derek was in hospital and not able to see his kids.”

Kate added: “And the thousands of other people couldn’t see people that they loved because they were following the guidelines. The rules were very muddled for us out here.”

“This gives the impression you still don’t get why they are cross. You still don’t get why people are upset and they want to hold you to more account,” she continued while blinking away tears.

“You made the decision to go in at a time before you had answered to the inquiry and at a time when people still feel very raw.”
