Kate Garraway shares Derek's final words as he feared he was just about to die

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has shared the devastating moment she thought her husband Derek Draper had just minutes left to live.

Over the past few years, the 55-year-old broadcaster has opened up about her partner’s devastating health struggles after he contracted coronavirus back in 2020.

During the height of his struggles, Derek became the UK’s longest inpatient in hospital where he almost died after he was diagnosed with sepsis.

Although the broadcaster is growing in strength, he is still facing the repercussions of the global virus every day.

Now, Kate has revealed the emotional final words her husband said to her when he believed he just had minutes left to live during that devastating period.

In a recent interview with The Sun, the presenter explained: “At one point Derek said to me, ‘This is it this time, I am gone’. It was just terrifying”.

She added: “His sepsis was gut-wrenching for all of us because it had gone undiagnosed until the point where it was about to take his life away again.

“Poor Derek’s condition currently covers about 11 specialisms of medical care.”

Derek spent a large portion of 2022 in hospital due to his specialist health conditions, but now the journalist is being looked after by Kate who is surviving on approximately two hours of sleep at their family home.

Since he returned from the hospital, Kate spent thousands of pounds transforming their home to make it more suitable for him.

Before he moved back into the family home, Kate installed a wet room downstairs and converted a downstairs room into his bedroom.

Before disgruntled fans complained, Kate clarified that the family had not received any priority treatment from the NHS.

The loving couple continue to sit on the waiting lists like “everyone else”, before adding it should always be that way.

However, she admitted that the transition has been “tough financially” for the family as they adjusted to the changes that came with Derek’s long-term condition.

The early-morning news anchor has also funded treatment for a trip to North America as she showered British Airways and American Airlines with praise for their assistance.

Last year, Kate funded the 11,000-mile round trip for Derek to receive ground-breaking medical treatment in November after a famous US doctor contacted her after her appearance on the ITV morning show.

The former political lobbyist is due take another trip across the pond at some point later this month to undergo an intense 28-day treatment where medics will closely monitor his brain, liver and lung function.

As she reflected on the new opportunity, Kate explained that Derek was “excited” and was “desperate” to recover from the illness which has forced him to rely on round-the-clock care.
