Liam Payne slapped with driving ban and fine after being caught speeding in £35k truck

One Direction legend Liam Payne has been hit with a six-month driving ban after being caught driving over the speed limit in his £35,000 pick-up truck.

The pop star was taken to court after being caught speeding in February on the A40 Westway flyover in Shepherd’s Bush, London. Payne was snapped by a speed camera travelling 43 mph in a 30mph speed limit, according to The Sun.

The 30-year-old reportedly apologised for his wrongdoing and wrote to the court owning up to it, reports the Evening Standard. Magistrate Samina Malik ordered him to pay a £293 fine, £90 in costs and a £117 victim surcharge.

The event occurred shortly after midnight on February 24, in his Ford Ranger Wildtrak Deranged Edition. However, he claims he wasn’t aware of any wrongdoing at the time.

In a letter written to Lavender Hill Magistrates Court, he revealed that he was unaware of the speed limit and hadn’t even realised he’d broken it. Payne wrote: “I did not realise the speed limit and apologise for speeding.”

The star agreed to pay the fines but explained he couldn’t reveal his finances. He said: “I am self-employed and cannot provide the information at this stage. However, I will pay any fine imposed within 14 days.”

After magistrates assessed the case in private, based on written evidence alone, following an agonising wait, Payne was sentenced behind-closed-doors in the Single Justice Procedure. In addition to his fines, court records indicate that the ‘Polaroid’ singer, received four penalty points for his speeding offence.

Payne reportedly has ‘Repeat offending’ on his driving record and was handed four penalty points for the speeding offence. It’s said he now has until November 6 to pay the fine and requisite court fees.

Sadly for Payne, the court case is just the latest hit in his personal life. In August, after falling ill, he was given no other choice but to cancel his South American tour.

Subsequently, during a romantic holiday in Italy with his girlfriend, the singer was rushed to hospital with a kidney condition. The incident came as a bitter blow to Payne, who’d only just overcome an alcohol addiction following a stint in a rehab facility in the States.
