Lily-Rose Depp’s HBO The Idol show slammed over ‘graphic sex’ and her ‘constant breasts’

Lily-Rose Depp’s new TV show – The Idol – has been slammed over its graphic and extreme sex scenes and gratuitous nudity.

Despite received a five minute standing ovation following its Cannes Film Festival premiere on Monday, the HBO series has been panned by critics, with the Rolling Stone dubbing it ‘torture porn’.

The series, which is due to air from June 5, was picked apart for “selling sex” and for Depp “rarely doing a scene without flashing her breasts or a**”.

However, in spite of a slew of negativity tearing into the Sam Levinson, The Weeknd and Reza Fahim creation, some did praise Lily’s performance.

The series is said to follow the story of ‘rising pop idol’ Jocelyn (Lily-Rose) as she starts a ‘complicated relationship’ with Tedros (The Weeknd), ‘a leader of a modern-day cult’ and nightclub manager.

Despite the innocuous sounding synopsis from its producers, reviewers have panned the series which tries “hard to be shocking”.

A review by The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye dubbed the forthcoming drama “more regressive than transgressive”.

The review referenced a scene where a music executive argued with a director to “stop c***blocking America,” saying it “puts a metaphorical hand up at incoming haters”, adding “sex sells, and The Idol revels in that”.

It also criticised the ‘gratuitous’ displays of nudity for Lily-Rose’s character Jocelyn, adding: “Rarely does a scene go by without the camera showing flashes of her breasts or a**.”

However, the critic noted how the series “shows glimmers of potential when it stops trying so hard to be shocking”.

Meanwhile, Variety critics Matt Donnelly and Zack Sharf wrote: “Revenge porn photos of bodily fluids on Depp’s face, masturbation with ice cubes, nightclub-owning scam artists and vile Hollywood sycophants populated the first two episodes of the already-controversial series.”

Elsewhere, The Los Angeles Times review compared its “similar penchant for graphic sex, cute clothes and self-destruction” to Euphoria.

The review also noted disturbing sequences that might justify the ‘torture porn’ label, including discussion of a mental breakdown, an intimacy coordinator being dismissed and a graphic revenge porn sequence.
