Naga Munchetty issues urgent warning to fans over devious scammer impersonating her online

BBC presenter Naga Munchetty has alerted fans to a fake Instagram account which is impersonating her.

The 48-year-old uses the handle tvnaga to update her 60,000 followers – often posting updates from her latest workout.

However, an account by the name of tvnaga_ and using an image of Naga appearing on The Weakest Link claimed in its bio to be the TV star.

The bio read: “Born to be real. Personal private account for text.”

The BBC Breakfast presenter pointed out on her genuine account: “This account is not mine.

“It is impersonating me.”

With just 25 followers and no Instagram verification, many fans revealed that they had already spotted the account as a fake when it requested to follow them.

One fan shared: “Yes I got a request but knew it was fake. I did report it and notify you of it.”

Another joked, adding a laughing emoji: “Knew it straight away, you will never follow me.”

A third added: “I think the ‘born to be real’ shows that’s quite obviously not you. You wouldn’t choose such a phrase, surely. You’re way more creative and intelligent than that!”

While many fans took the warning in good spirit, some couldn’t help but point out the ironic timing of the fake account as the 15th series of BBC’s fraud show Claimed and Shamed started just yesterday, with Naga as its key presenter.

Naga recently made a well-received appearance on Have I Got News For You

A follower jokingly shared Naga’s catchphrase from the show: “Caught short, claimed and now shamed.”

The documentary series shares an insight into how fraudsters, and the teams hunting them down, operate in the insurance sector.

While Naga was busily promoting the new series earlier this week, her fans were somewhat preoccupied with begging her stay in a completely different hosting position.

A few fans shared in the comments: “Not relevant to this programme how ever did want to say I watched you on Have I Got News For You……thought you chaired it excellent, witty, funny tongue in cheek thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Wish it was a regular gig.”

Last week the Breakfast presenter was a guest host on Have I Got News For You, showing off her light-hearted, comedic side that rarely gets the spotlight during the news show.

Although she was joined by a star-studded cohort, including long-time panellists Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, Naga undeniably stole the show and countless fans have been requesting her to become a permanent host.
