Rapper AKA, 35, massacred in gunned down attack following vicious drive-by shooting

Rapper AKA has died in a hail of bullets during a drive-by shooting shortly before he was due to take the stage to perform.

The South African, 35, whose real name was Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was one of two men killed in Durban on Friday (February 10)

AKA and the second man were standing outside a restaurant in the city at 10pm local time (8pm GMT) when local reports said two cars drove past with passengers opening fire.

AKA had been due to perform at a nightclub called YUGO but the event was cancelled with a notice on social media saying the event was being axed “due to unforeseen circumstances”.

Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said: “On arrival, paramedics met total chaos and a scene where two men, believed to be in their late 30s, sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first male had sustained multiple gun shot wounds and showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.”

Fans have taken to social media to express their shock at the incident, in which it is believed AKA was shot six times, with one writing on Twitter: “RIP AKA… the music industry in this world won’t forget you. You did great sir,” and another saying: “I am utterly devastated and heartbroken.”

AKA was born in Cape Town and broke into the music scene in 2002 when he formed a hip hop group called Entity alongside fellow performers Vice Versa and Greyhound.

AKA went on to become a solo artist, releasing his debut album, Alter Ego, in 2011, and then three more with the most recent being Touch My Blood in 2018.

In his personal life, AKA had an on-off relationship with music producer DJ Zinhle, 39, real name Ntombezinhle Jiyane, and they welcomed a daughter named Kairo Olwethu Forbes in 2015.

The couple split up that year before reconciling in 2018 and parting again in 2019 – but although AKA found love with Nelli Tembe, she fell from a balcony and died in 2021, the year the pair became engaged.
