Singer and screen icon Jane Birkin dies aged 76 as heartbroken fans pay tribute

Jane Birkin has died aged 76, French media has reported.

The French-English actress and singer was reportedly found at home by her caregiver.

Her incredible legacy features being the name behind the iconic Hermés Birkin handbag, which came to be in 1983.

She is one of Britain’s best-known Sixities sensations, known for her romantic affairs, striking looks and fashion sense.

Jane is best known for the French duet Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus, which she sung with her partner Serge Gainsbourg in 1968.

Following the news of Jane’s passing, fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the star.

One fan penned: “RIP Jan Birkin. She and Serge Gainsbourg were iconcs on our youth. Unforgettable.”

Another added: “RIP Janie Birkin. I really did not expect this one.”

A third person said: “Bon voyage #JaneBirkin #RIP.”

While a fourth added: “JANE BIRKIN NOOO”

Jane began her career as an actress, appearing in minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup and Kaleidoscope .

In 1968, she met Serge while co-starring with him in Slogan, which marked the beginning of a years-long working and personal relationship.

The duo released their debut album Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg in 1969 and she attained further acting credits in the Agatha Christie adaptations Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun.

After separating from Gainsbourg in 1980, Jane continued to work as both an actress and a singer, appearing in various independent films and recording numerous solo albums.

In 1991, she appeared in the miniseries Red Fox, and in the American drama film A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries, in 1998.

In 2016, she starred in the Academy Award-nominated short film La femme et le TGV, which she said would be her final film role.

Jane has lived mainly in France since the 1970s.

She is the mother of photographer Kate Barry, with her first husband John Barry; actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, with Serge; and musician Lou Doillon, with Jacques Doillon.
