Strictly’s Adam Thomas diagnosed with ‘painful’ illness just before show launch

Strictly star Adam Thomas’ upcoming participation in the BBC dancing competition could be thrown into jeopardy.

It comes after the actor was diagnosed with a painful chronic illness that could impact his ability to perform.

The Waterloo Road star, 35, was told by physicians that he was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, which has caused “a lot of pain” in his limbs and joints.

His diagnosis comes just days after he was announced to be taking to the dancefloor in the upcoming series.

But despite the challenge, Adam said he is focused on doing his best and making it as far as he can.

The actor, who is known for playing Adam Barton on Emmerdale, made his diagnosis public ahead of his 35th birthday on Friday (August 11).

Taking to Instagram, the soap star confessed that the last year had been filled with struggles.

Captioning a photo of himself and his family which he posted on Thursday, he wrote: “Well it’s my birthday tomorrow and I turn 35!!

“How did that happen, does this mean I should stop acting like a kid now haha. As much as I act like a kid, my body is telling another story…”

He explained that he had no idea what was happening to him, with pain shooting from his knees to his wrists, fingers, ankles and toes.

After being in pain since January, Thomas finally plucked up the courage to himself checked out.

“And finally after several blood tests back and forth to doctors and hospitals, I’ve been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis!” he said.

Adam confessed that he believed that the condition only affect people later in life, but joked “that’s not the case, clearly!”

He later wrote that it has been “a tough old year” for him but was happy that he was finally getting his condition under control.

The star also paid tribute to his wife Caroline and two kids for putting up with him as he went through his diagnosis journey.

“And I just want to say thank you to Caroline and the kids for going on this journey with me, as I know it’s been challenging and frustrating at times but hopefully we’re on the right path now!”

Thomas was announced to be taking part on the BBC dancing competition on Tuesday.

Speaking after he was revealed as a contestant, he beamed that he was buzzing to be joining the cast.

“I’ve been such a big fan of the show for years, I can’t believe I’m actually doing it,” he admitted.

He also joked that he “can’t dance to save his life” but was ready and willing to learn with his professional dancing partner.
