Top Gear’s Freddie Flintoff had ‘alarm bells’ before 130mph open top car crash

Top Gear star Freddie Flintoff voiced his worries about a stunt that led to a terrifying crash before it happened, according to reports.

The cricket icon was involved in the accident back in December 2022 while filming for the BBC show, which he has presented for since 2019. He was airlifted to hospital after he flipped in an open top bar while allegedly travelling at 130mph, which resulted in broken ribs and facial injuries.

A source told The Sun that the 45-year-old was “apprehensive” about doing the stunt and asked about the safety of it all. The insider said: “Freddie voiced his worries about the safety of the stunt on the set on the day of the accident. He questioned whether or not it was OK, given the vehicle and the conditions on the track.”

“He was apprehensive before he got behind the wheel and production staff at the track were aware of this. He was obviously used to taking part in these stunts during his time on the show, but alarm bells were ringing.” They then claimed that there are worries Top Gear may never return to air following Freddie’s horrific accident.

The crash left him with facial injuries and broken ribs

Flintoff’s alleged “final words” before the stunt have also been revealed after sources told Daily Mail that he asked whether he “needed a helmet”. Reports have also claimed that the car – a Morgan Super 3 with an open top and three wheels – was not fully equipped with airbags.

The car, which later flipped causing Freddie’s injuries, was categorised as a “motorised tricycle” according to its maker’s website. Following the crash, Flintoff was airlifted from the scene and faced a 45 minute wait to be taken to hospital. Freddie has yet to speak out on the accident 9 months on.

There are talks that Top Gear may not air again after Freddie’s accident

However, the Top Gear star has been seen out and about – in early September 2023, he was pictured at an England cricket team One-Day International series against New Zealand. The event took place at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens and his injuries were clearly visible. Onlookers could see the scars on Freddie’s face and he appeared to be wearing medical tape over his nose.
