Winter Love Island 2023 has lowest ratings in 7 years as fans slam 'stale format'

Love Island’s 2023 Winter rendition didn’t serve well for viewers, garnering it’s lowest rating in seven years.

The final, which saw Kai Fagan and Sanam Harrinanan win the public vote and the £50,000 cash prize, had far few viewers that last year’s final, which saw Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Davide Sanclimenti crowned and still going strong seven months later.

ITV have revealed that the final 1.3m viewers in total across all devices, becoming the most-watched programme among the 16 to 24 demographic on any channel on Monday (13th March) evening, but failed to compare with last year’s 3.4million viewers.

The company shared that the audience is said to have peaked at 1.5m viewers while the series averaged at 2.8m viewers with catch-up taken into account.

The hit dating show is the most-watched programme on ITVX so far with 157m streams.

Upon winning, Kai and Sanam were dubbed a “wholesome” couple by fans who were proud to see them take the top spot, but others were critical of the series’ cast as well as the “stale format.”

“Literally stopped watching love island this season because this cast was irritating,” one tweeted.

“It wasn’t just the cast,” another argued. “The whole format is stale, and I’ve been saying that for years. S8 was popular because everyone loved the cast, but this season I think it’s getting more and more obvious that the EXACT same format is getting really dull.

The entire show is massively overproduced now, it’s awkward to watch. It’s been said time and time again that the manufactured chats with all the girls and all the boys in the morning are obviously producer-pushed, and they are boring,” they added.

In 2021, nearly three million viewers watched Liam Reardon and Millie Court win the show, while the previous year saw close to 2.5m viewers tune in for Finn Tapp and Paige Turley’s victory in the winter season.

Meanwhile Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea’s win in 2019 brought in more than three million viewers, as did Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham in 2018.
