According to science, the worst jump scare in horror movie history doesn’t come from flicks like Insidious, Sinister or even The Conjuring franchise.
Instead, a new survey has revealed that the jump scare moment horror lovers find the most frightening dates way back to 1975. A survey conducted by Perspectus Global for Papa John’s and given to 2,000 film fans in the UK found that the scariest moment in horror doesn’t have anything to do with paranormal activity or poltergeists.
Nope, it’s a good old fashioned creature feature that tops the list. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was voted as featuring the worst jump scare by 31% of those surveyed. In particular, it’s the moment Hooper finds fisherman Ben Gardner’s boat – and his severed head.

Coming in second is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 hit Psycho, which of course features that horrific shower scene. In third is 1979 flick Alien’s scene which sees Dallas discover the alien in a vent. In fact, films like The Conjuring placed 13th on the list, while Sinister – starring Ethan Hawke – only ranked 19th. Sinister comes out at number nine, Paranormal Activity 2 makes the list at 14 and The Grudge at 12.
The survey also found that Cardiff residents are the biggest horror fans in the UK, followed by London and Liverpool. Cambridge, Bristol and Plymouth are the least likely to favour a spooky flick.
It comes as the ‘scariest film of the year’ heads to Netflix just in time for Halloween. Possession flick Talk To Me follows a group of friends who become obsessed with the powers of an embalmed hand that allows whoever holds it to see spirits – and become possessed by them.
The Australian flick follows 17-year-old Mia, who soon gets hooked on the phenomenon and finds herself possessed for longer than she should be, unleashing a terrifying supernatural force.
Critics at Sundance Film Festival labelled it the “scariest film of the year”, while one reviewer from The Independent said of the flick: “Its practical effects are effective, rendering it dead in bloated, blotchy, dripping flesh.” Starring Sophie Wilde as protagonist Mia, the flick was directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou.
