BBC Breakfast’s Ben Thompson red-faced as he gets caught out on camera

Ben Thompson was left red-faced when he didn’t realise he was back on the air during the latest instalment of BBC Breakfast.

The host joined co-star Sarah Campbell on the iconic red sofa on Monday (August 5) stepping in for usual faces Jon Kay and Sally Nugent to deliver the latest global headlines.

With Olympic events stirring up the TV schedule, Breakfast shifted from its regular spot on BBC One to BBC Two just 45 minutes into the broadcast.

Cue an unexpecting Ben chatting with Sarah as the programme returned from a quick break, much to his amusement once he realised the cameras were rolling again.

A giggling but slightly ruffled Ben announced: “Hello. Welcome if you’re joining us on BBC Two. This is Breakfast with Sarah Campbell and Ben Thompson and let’s take you straight to Carol because she’s got a look at the weather for us this morning.”, reports the Express.

Meanwhile, the show has been caught in controversy following its decision to feature detailed images of surgery before the watershed on Sunday (August 4) morning.

Depicting Pinky Jolley’s intense struggle with sepsis and her subsequent dependence on a feeding tube due to bungled treatment abroad, the program dove into footage of her bariatric surgery while it was narrated by the performing surgeon.

Taken aback by the gritty portrayal, disturbed viewers quickly took to X, previously known as Twitter, to voice their disapproval. A shocked viewer expressed dismay, as noted by the Express: “Graphic surgery scenes this early in a morning… yum #bbcbreakfast,” while another grumbled: “Surgery and dog s**t lovely Sunday topics this morning #BBCBreakfast.”

Someone else contributed to the growing displeasure, remarking: “Would have been nice if Pinky highlighted the dangers of surgery in Turkey considering we are paying for the remedial surgery #BBCBreakfast.”

One commentator added their sarcastic two cents: “You get what you pay for @BBCBreakfast CRAZY to risk your long-term health going to Turkey for surgery no matter how cheap it is….. it’s CHEAP for a reason.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
