BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent had a fiery exchange with James Cleverly on the show as he pleaded with her to let him have his say.
The 52-year-old telly host was back on the iconic red sofa on Tuesday (July 23) with co-host Jon Kay, as they delivered the morning’s top stories to viewers across the nation.
With nominations for Rishi Sunak’s successor set to open on Wednesday (July 24), whispers of Cleverly throwing his hat in the ring have been buzzing through the halls of Westminster, hinting he might be eyeing up the top job in the Conservative Party come November.
Sally dived straight into the thick of it, grilling Mr. Cleverly about whether he’s gunning to be the next Tory leader, but he dodged giving a clear-cut answer. Not missing a beat, Sally pressed on with “So that’s not a no”.
Cleverly chuckled and tried to steer the chat towards Labour’s “catastrophic start to the Home Affairs portfolio”, reports the Express. But Sally wasn’t having any of it, quipping: “Mr Cleverly, this sounds very much like a pitch to be leader.”
To which Cleverly retorted: “No, you’re the one asking questions about the leadership and I’m desperately trying to talk about Labours failures in government.”
Keen to keep things rolling, Sally shot back: “Ok, let’s talk about what you want to talk about”. This comes just a day after Jon was notably absent from BBC Breakfast on Monday (July 22).
This time, Sally was accompanied on the couch by Ben Thompson. The audience was pleased to see her back, though some questioned Jon’s sudden no-show.
One patron lamented: “No dad joke Jon this morning.” Another joined in, saying: “Sally looks lovely though.”
Usually, the presenting duties of BBC Breakfast from Monday to Wednesday are handled by Jon and Sally, while Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt take over from Thursday to Saturday. Different faces interchangeably host the Sunday show.
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
