From fighting of terrifying pirates in Captain Phillips, to voicing every child’s favourite cowboy Woody in the Toy Story franchise, Tom Hanks is a household name with a career any actor would be proud of.
However, the Hollywood superstar surely regrets some aspects of his role in Big (1988), which sees the then 31-year-old actor play a young boy called Josh who wakes up in the body of an adult man after making a “wish” at a Zoltan machine at a fun fair.
Yeah it’s a stone-cold classic but while some film fans have defended the premise, many online have branded Big “creepy”.
Let us know in the comments if you think Big still stands up today or should be cancelled, but here are five moments in the film that you just couldn’t get away with today.

5: Josh’s Mum
Finding out your child is missing is no laughing matter, especially when you have just seen a fully grown man wearing no trousers in your kitchen. However, this is exactly what happens to Josh’s mum in Big.
Shockingly, the directors play the scene for laughs, showing Tom Hank’s Josh jovially escaping his terrified mother, who brandishes a knife at her son.
However, when you imagine how terrified his poor mother must have been upon finding her son missing following what she sees as the intrusion of a potential half-naked sex pest, it definitely leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
4: Filthy Sex Jokes
Considering Tom Hanks plays a literal child in the film, some of the raunchy sex jokes about him would surely see the film get cancelled in 2024.
Perhaps the most crude comes just before the famous sleepover scene, where Tom Hanks chats with his love-interest, the gorgeous Elizabeth Perkins’ character Susan, about their arrangements for the night.
Referring to which of his bunk beds 12-year-old Josh wants to sleep on, Hanks says that smitten Susan can only stay the night if ‘he can go on top’.
Thinking he is referencing his preferred sexual position, Perkins’ character raises her eyebrows suggestively, unknowingly fantasising about a child.

3: Creepy Co-workers
There’s nothing funny about a co-worker perving on colleagues or making filthy remarks in the office, right? Well, according to Big, there absolutely is.
When Josh his hired to work for a toy company, he meets Scotty, his cubicle-mate played by legendary comedian Jon Lovitz.
Scotty is a total sleaze-ball. In his first conversation with Hanks’ character, he points at a female co-worker and says “Say hello to her and she’s yours. She’ll wrap her legs around you so tight you’ll be begging for mercy.”
Scotty is not even the only difficult colleague 12-year-old Josh meets. His scheming rival Paul swears and even wrestles the man-sized-boy during a game of racquet ball.
2: Kissing a Kid – and more
Dirty jokes aren’t all that goes on between Josh and the beautiful Susan. On several occasions, the two engage in intimate moments. As well as kissing, in one now infamous scene Perkins’ character unbuttons her top, allowing the 12-year-old Josh to caress her breast.
Of course, the character is played by Tom Hanks, but knowing he is meant to be a child is incredibly unsettling.
One social media user responded to the scene saying: “Doesn’t matter if she knew or not it’s still a chargeable crime. Can you imagine if the genders were reversed?”
1: Josh Gets groomed at the End
Luckily, Josh and Susan don’t continue their relationship when she finds out his true age. However, this doesn’t mean that she say and do some super creepy things.
Some viewers have accused the character of being a groomer, after she suggests that her and Josh could hook up when he’s older, telling him “keep hold of her phone number.”
This is a really weird thing to say to a child, and when she kisses him on the forehead in the film’s finale, it makes what should be an innocent moment seem super creepy.
